Essen: Drama at basement fire! Resident rescued with turntable ladder

Things are getting worse in Essen! On Sunday (September 15th) the fire brigade was called out to a fire in Überruhr at around 5:15 p.m. Callers reported thick smoke coming from the basement of an apartment building.

When the Essen fire department arrived on site, the black smoke had spread throughout the entire building (two floors). What was particularly treacherous was that at the beginning it was unclear to the emergency services whether there were still residents in the apartment building or not. That's why they first explored the building.

At the same time, teams went into the basement and the stairwell to find the cause of the heavy smoke and to search the house in Essen for other people. Then the drama: The firefighters discovered a person on a balcony on the first floor at the back of the house.

They were unable to leave the apartment due to the thick smoke in the building. The fire department therefore used a turntable ladder to rescue them from the dangerous smoke.

The troops in the basement then found a burning washing machine, which filled the entire building with smoke. Garbage was also burning. Fire-fighting efforts began and the house was cleared of smoke using fans. Fortunately, no one was injured. The police are now investigating what ultimately caused the fire.
