Olivia Colman in “The Favorite” (Searchlight Pictures)

“The Favorite” (2018)

The biting historical comedy The Favourite was Emma Stone's first collaboration with her current favourite actor, the director of Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness Yorgos Lanthimos, although it was Olivia Coleman who won the Best Actress Oscar for that film. Not your typical period film, The Favourite is sexy and repulsive, seductive and repulsive, based on the three extraordinary performances of Coleman as Queen Anne, Rachel Weisz as her power-hungry friend and lover, and Stone as the ambitious former aristocrat turned scullery maid who drives the two apart. It's hard to quantify; tough and dramatic, playful in a twisted trickster's way, funny but haunting.

Bill Skarsgård in “Boy Kills World” (Roadside Attractions)

“Boy Kills World” (2024)

The action-packed, recently released film Boy Kills World is built around one central idea – the main character Boy is deaf and mute, and the entire film is narrated by the voice in his head. This voice is provided by none other than H. Jon Benjamin, aka the voice of Bob Belcher in Bob's Burgers, which is a little distracting at times, but otherwise Boy Kills World is a lively, satisfyingly action-packed dystopian revenge film. Pennywise himself, Bill Skarsgård, plays the muscle-bound, hyper-trained brawler Boy, who sets out to overthrow the totalitarian dynasty that murdered his family when he was a child, with Yayan Ruhian as his mentor taking the film's action scale to new levels. With its distinctive style and dynamic fight scenes, this is a fun film for action fans that you may have missed in the theater.

Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau in "Babies"Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau in "Babies"

Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau in “Babes” (Neon)

“Babes” (2024)

Watch two of the funniest actresses in the business support each other, fight each other, and generally persevere in NEON's acclaimed comedy Babes. Also directed by one of the funniest actresses in the business, Pamela Adlon, who makes her film debut after directing 44 episodes of her excellent FX dramedy series Better Things. Ilana Glazer co-wrote and stars as the carefree and somewhat chaotic Eden, who decides to have a baby after getting pregnant following a one-night stand, relying on her childhood best friend (Michelle Buteau) to help her out more than a little.

“Freaky Friday” (Disney)“Freaky Friday” (Disney)

“A Crazy Friday” (2003)

There's never a bad time to watch 2018's Freaky Friday, but now that the highly anticipated sequel reuniting Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan is in the works, it really is time to watch the film again. Or, if you're so lucky, for the first time. Curtis and Lohan play a mother-daughter duo stuck in a body swap until they learn to understand each other's struggles, with both actresses doing excellent jobs as leads. Lohan is bubbly and charming as an uptight mother in her teenage daughter's body, and Curtis, in turn, is boisterous as a wild teen kid who suddenly has access to all the freedoms (and pitfalls) of adult life. Most importantly, their chemistry is megawatt, making the film one of the best body swap movies of all time.

Megan Fox - Jennifer's BodyMegan Fox - Jennifer's Body

“Jennifer’s Corpse” (20th century)

“Jennifer’s Body” (2009)

You know how people say, “Time will tell”? Well, time has with “Jennifer's Body,” the once-discarded film that has been thoroughly reassessed and reevaluated as one of the best horror-comedies of its time. Written by Diablo Cody (“Juno”) and directed by Karyn Kusama (“The Invitation”), “Jennifer's Body” was the subject of an egregious marketing campaign and backlash from Megan Fox that has been well-documented and discussed in the years since, but none of that really matters now because 15 years after the film first hit theaters, it's still a hilarious horror-comedy smash that taps into deep, dark, rarely discussed dynamics of female friendships and unleashes a man-eating Megan Fox as the demonically possessed Jennifer. And oh boy, did she eat.

“We” (Universal Pictures)

“Us”

Jordan Peele's Get Out follow-up Us is probably the weakest of his three films – which is crazy, because it's still so good. Lupita Nyong'o delivers one of her best performances – two, actually – as a mother trying to protect her family from unknown terror and a doppelgänger trying to shower that terror on her. Peele has extraordinary cinematic command and he is simply loves Genre, a combination that makes his films some of the most satisfying, rich and unpretentious horror films on the market.

“The Lizzie McGuire Movie” (Disney)“The Lizzie McGuire Movie” (Disney)

“The Lizzie McGuire Movie” (Disney)

We may forever mourn the revival of “Lizzie McGuire” that never stood a chance, but at least we'll always have “The Lizzie McGuire Movie.” The de facto finale of the popular early 2000s Disney Channel Original Series, the 2003 film sends Hilary Duff's teen queen to Rome, where she lives out some pop idol fantasies and eventually falls in love with Gordo. If this isn't your era of Disney Channel, don't worry, there are plenty of fan favorites on Hulu this month, including “High School Musical,” “Camp Rock” and “Hannah Montana The Movie.”
