Violent attack on the bus: Gifhorn left-wingers make serious allegations

Gifhorn. Last Saturday evening, a violent attack is said to have taken place on a public bus in Gifhorn. According to the police, investigations have been launched, while the Gifhorn left-wingers are calling it a Nazi attack and are criticizing the police.

According to the police report, at around 7:40 p.m., verbal arguments broke out between two sisters and a group of young men on a public bus. At a bus stop on Braunschweiger Strasse, a physical altercation broke out between the two people. This was quickly ended by police officers. The officers were behind the public bus in their patrol car at the time and were therefore able to intervene immediately. The identities of all the people involved have been established. According to the usual information, the altercation only resulted in minor injuries among those involved, despite two kicks to the head and torso of one person.

A video showing excerpts from the altercation and the police intervention is currently circulating on social media and is also available to the Gifhorn police. It is part of the ongoing investigation. The police say that no reliable information can be given at this point in time about possible backgrounds and motives.

Criticism of police operation

The Gifhorn Left, meanwhile, is making serious accusations against the police. In a press statement on Sunday, they claim that the incident was a “Nazi attack” and that the perpetrators kicked the victim several times despite police escort. Sandra Zecchino, deputy chairwoman of the Gifhorn Left, explained that after Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Wolfsburg, a group of people who they identified as right-wing extremists were out and about in Gifhorn. According to Zecchino, this group marched through the city despite police escort. She criticized the fact that the police accompanied the group but apparently did not intervene effectively when the group attacked the victim.

“In both places, the group was mostly accompanied by police, who, when I asked, assured me that the Nazis would definitely not be marching through Gifhorn alone. The police also confirmed to me that these were not just Nazis who had travelled there, but that some of them lived in Gifhorn. This morning, I was shown a video in which at least four of the Nazis in a bus opposite the Teves car park chased a victim out of the bus and kicked the victim several times while he was lying on the ground in front of the door. Only after several kicks – including to the head – did the police intervene.

It cannot be that the police accompany a group of Nazis and yet a serious violent attack occurs. I find it appalling that such a serious attack could occur under police escort and that the police apparently considered 'driving behind the bus in a car' to be sufficient escort for the group. After an increasing number of Nazi graffiti and stickers appeared in Gifhorn in recent months, a new level of escalation has been reached. “Action must finally be taken,” demands Zecchino.

Left demands clarification

In response to the events, the Left Party has submitted a request to the city council to obtain further information about the incident and to clarify possible police failures.
