A murder investigation has been launched after a woman in her thirties was stabbed to death in east London.

The victim was found with fatal stab wounds at an address in Stepney in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of murder.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting a crime following the death at a property in Duckett Street.

Forensic officers are on site looking for clues. Detectives will be combing through CCTV and other footage from the area.

Assistant Detective Chief Inspector Ben Dalloway, of the Met's Specialist Crime Command, is leading the investigation and said: “This is a tragic incident which resulted in the death of a young woman. Those involved appear to know each other and were present at the address throughout the evening.

“Although this investigation is still in its early stages, we have already made significant progress and arrested two people. We are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

“Officers will continue to carry out essential work on site and I ask residents to please be patient during this time. I would also ask that anyone who has seen anything or has any information that could help us please contact us.”

The crime scene is still visible around the property as police investigations continue and officers go door to door.

Detective Superintendent Mike Cagney, of the Central East Command Unit, which covers Tower Hamlets, said: “My thoughts are with the family of this young woman at this difficult time. Following this horrific incident, my officers are working closely with our specialist colleagues to understand exactly what happened.

“Over the coming days, local officers will be out and about in Duckett Street and the surrounding area to provide some much-needed reassurance to the community, but also to give anyone with concerns or information about this incident the opportunity to speak to us.

“There is still a crime scene at the address and investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.”
