NEW DELHI: Indian Formula 2 driver Kush Maini had a serious accident at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday. Maini's car, which was originally in fifth place on the grid, failed to start properly, creating a dangerous situation as his stationary car remained on the track while competitors maneuvered at high speed to avoid a collision.
Despite the efforts of many drivers to get around Maini's broken-down car, it was eventually hit from behind by another racer, resulting in a violent collision that resulted in several vehicles overturning.
This incident led to the immediate interruption of the race with the red flag.

Remarkably, Maini, like the other drivers directly involved in the accident, Pepe Martí from Spain and Oliver Goethe Danish-German nationality – were not violated.

This result is due to the advanced safety protocols and measures that have been gradually introduced in motorsport to ensure the well-being of participants in such high-risk situations.
Maini, who is affiliated with Invicta Racing, had entered the main race with optimistic prospects after securing a creditable fifth place in the qualifying round.

His ambition to score points and recover from a less than rewarding sprint race the previous day was abruptly dashed by the crash, leading to a frustrating end to his campaign in Azerbaijan.
In his second year in Formula 2, Maini is also part of the Alpine F1 Teamand is actively pursuing a position as reserve driver at Alpine for the 2025 season.
Despite a promising start to the 2024 season, Maini's performance has declined and he currently sits 11th in the drivers' standings.
However, his teammate Gabriel Bortoleto is currently leading the championship. After the interruption caused by the accident, the race continued and ended with the victory of the Dutch racer Richard Verschoor, followed by Victor Martins and Andrea Kimi Antonelli who completed the podium.
