Cases of sexual assault in the Indian armed forces raise doubts about responsibility

Recent reports have highlighted cases of sexual assault within the Indian Armed Forces, raising doubts about accountability and justice. A female flying officer recently accused an Indian Air Force Squadron Commander of attempted sexual assault on December 31, 2023.

Despite presenting strong evidence, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court granted bail to the accused officer in the rape case. According to Indian media reports, the court also ordered a stay of the charges.

The police officer complained of sexual harassment and psychological torture and stated that the accused was free to move around. She expressed fear of surveillance and harassment for speaking out against her superior and mentioned suicidal thoughts.

In another case, a retired colonel claimed that his wife was abused and mistreated in a military hospital. A complaint of assault on government officials has reportedly been filed against the retired colonel.

These cases have raised questions about the impartiality of investigations and trials into allegations of sexual assault in the Indian armed forces.
