Canelo Alvarez challenges Dmitry Bivol to a rematch in May 2025

By Isaac Nyamungu

Canelo Alvarez is still sore about the defeat he suffered in his fight against Dmitry Bivol. The feeling of being a loser has remained in his mind and apparently he is hurt. The Mexican superstar did not like the idea of being beaten, even less when he could not compete due to his hand injury. The loss sparked the debate about a rematch, but it never happened. However, all signs point to the time being right, so fans are likely to witness a rematch where he will show his skills and take revenge.

However, the fight is dependent on Canelo defeating Artur Beterbiev in their undecided light heavyweight championship fight on October 12. Additionally, Alvarez would still have to win his fight against Edgar Berlanga on Saturday night, September 14, for him to face Bivol in May 2025.

“I just want to show everyone that I'm still the best,” Alvarez said during Wednesday's press conference in Las Vegas. “I still love this sport. When I stop loving it, you'll know. I love my routine and I love going to the gym every day,” Canelo assured his fans before his clash with Berlanga this weekend.

Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs), who has held multiple titles in four categories, including the lineal middleweight and super middleweight titles, was declared the undisputed super middleweight champion when he defeated Plant by 11th-round TKO in November 2021. He made four more successful title defenses before the IBF stripped him of the belt in July when Alvarez opted to fight Berlanga over IBF mandatory challenger William Scull.

Canelo Alvarez also has notable victories over Gennadiy Golovkin (2-0-1 record in their trilogy), Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan, as well as Sergey Kovalev and Billy Joe Saunders.

Alvarez lost to Dmitry Bivol by unanimous decision after 12 rounds in May 2022. This loss has plagued him ever since. He attributed his loss to a hand injury, which meant he was not physically fit for the fight.

“Look, I know I can beat him. I'm a better fighter,” Alvarez said on his X account.
