Buffalo man sentenced to 14 years in prison for fatal attack

A man who violated a protection order and fatally punched and kicked his father-in-law has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced.

Mohammed Mia, 42, of Buffalo, was also sentenced to five years of post-release probation by State Supreme Court Judge Deborah A. Haendiges.

According to prosecutors, the incident occurred on October 24, 2021, when Mia ignored a protection order and went to his estranged wife's home in Buffalo.

According to prosecutors, Mia hit, punched and choked his wife and then attacked her father, 47-year-old Mohammed Hossain, when he and her mother tried to stop him.

According to prosecutors, Mia threw Hossain to the ground, punched and kicked him repeatedly, then fled in his vehicle while the victims called 911. He was arrested later that day when he went to the E-District police station to report that he had been attacked by his wife and her parents.

Hossain was taken to Erie County Medical Center with severe head injuries. He died three days later. Mia's wife and her mother suffered cuts, bruises and broken teeth.

Mia pleaded guilty on May 6 with the consent of the victim's family, settling the charge on the reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter, Keane said. A protective order was issued in her name until November 2040.
