Plan for extensive “The Walking Dead” future is in place – but “it’s something completely different”

If Norman Reedus has his way, “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” will bring us new adventures from post-apocalyptic Europe for quite some time to come.

While the audience is eagerly awaiting “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” season 2, lead actor Norman Reedus is already back in front of the camera for season 3 – and possibly even season 4. And even after that, there seems to be no end in sight. As the fan favorite stated in an interview, he is not ready to say goodbye to the title character so soon.

7 more years: “Daryl Dixon” could break “The Walking Dead” record

From 2010 to 2022, Norman Reedus played the character of Daryl Dixon in “The Walking Dead”. With an appearance in 175 of a total of 177 episodes, he was generally seen in the zombie series more than any of his colleagues – even though Daryl Dixon does not appear in the underlying comics by Robert Kirkman. Just a year after the big “The Walking Dead” finale, Reedus finally celebrated his big comeback in the spin-off “Daryl Dixon”. When asked how long he wanted to continue to play the role of the iconic crossbowman, the 55-year-old answered in an interview with the lifestyle magazine Mr. Feelgood:

“I think maybe another six or seven years. The Daryl Dixon spin-off gave me the opportunity to take the show in a different direction than the original. I didn't want to do the same show again in a different place. I wanted to reinvent it. And they let me create something new with other like-minded people involved. It feels fresh to me. It's written in a different language. It's filmed in a different way. It's not really about zombies and who gets bitten this week, it's something completely different. As long as I keep reinventing it, it's fun.”

After a total of eleven seasons, US broadcaster AMC brought “The Walking Dead” to an end in order to divide the tired franchise into three spin-offs that continue the stories of the most important characters independently of each other. Daryl, Carol (Melissa McBride), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) enabled a creative fresh start.

With the action moved from the USA to France, “Daryl Dixon” in particular presented itself with an innovative setting and a new style, which qualifies Reedus not only as the lead actor, but also as an executive producer. As he revealed to Mr. Feelgood, it is the creative freedom that drives him. If Reedus' schedule stays the same, “Daryl Dixon” could even outdo the spin-off “Fear the Walking Dead”, which ran for a total of eight seasons in eight years.

Great opportunity: “Daryl Dixon” has to answer these 7 questions

Even though AMC's seven-year plan has not yet been officially approved, fans of the zombie franchise should be pleased with Reedus' commitment and passion. After all, it opens up the possibility that the oldest questions of the post-apocalypse could still be answered. For one thing, it is still unclear whether there will ever be a reunion between Daryl and his former best friend Rick Grimes after “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” – and for another, “TWD” director Scott M. Gimple has been toying with the idea of an XXL crossover for years. Further seasons of “Daryl Dixon” make these plans a possibility.

But what fans from the very beginning will probably be much more interested in is the question of the outbreak of the zombie virus. We now know that it all started in France. But how did the virus get into the organism of every person worldwide and resurrect their bodies after death? Why were previously deceased people and other mammals spared? And why did European variants of the so-called walkers never find their way overseas?

In addition, there are currently numerous myths surrounding a possible cure. While the research facilities of the Civic Republic Military (CRM) never managed to develop a vaccine, the Pouvoir des Vivants movement behind Madame Genet (Anne Charrier) seems to be at least very close. It is also still unclear whether Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) is immune after being born from the womb of his mother, who was already zombified at the time – and thus carries the key to a cure. One thing is certain: the boy is something very special.

Something very special for Daryl is also his best friend Carol, who is the focus of “Daryl Dixon” Season 2 or “The Book of Carol”. You can find out how well you know her in the quiz:
