Minneapolis: Deadly hit-and-run: Teenager dies when woman drives into crowd

Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident in which a teenager was killed and other victims were injured.

Minneapolis police said they arrested a woman after she drove the wrong way down the road and into a crowd of people, leaving one teen dead and five other victims hospitalized.

What we know

Officers responded to a reported hit-and-run crash at the intersection of 5th Street North and Hennepin Avenue around 12:23 a.m. Saturday that left one person dead and several others injured.

A 16-year-old girl succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and was hospitalized. Police said one person is recovering from potentially life-threatening injuries, while four others were hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe the fatal accident occurred after an “altercation between a group of people” at the intersection of 5th Street North and Hennepin Avenue. Police say a woman then got into a vehicle, backed up on Hennepin Avenue and then drove the wrong way into the crowd on 5th Street North.

Witnesses reportedly followed the suspect as she drove out of the city center.

Officers then stopped the suspect's vehicle in the 2300 block of Byant Avenue North.

The woman accused of driving into the crowd was arrested and booked into the Hennepin County Jail on murder charges.
