Man arrested for destroying evidence in fatal shooting

SALISBURY, NC – A man was arrested Friday in connection with the fatal shooting at a Salisbury fundraiser on Sept. 8.

Nicholas Romero-Mandujano, 24, was arrested by Rowan County officials just before 4 p.m. Friday. Officials say Mandujano tampered with evidence by taking an AR-15 and a handgun from the crime scene.

Mandujano was charged with destruction of evidence.

Officials identified 19-year-old Rafael Varela Angeles as one of the victims. He was shot in the chest and died at the hospital.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.

ROWAN COUNTY, NC – Two victims were taken to a hospital after a shooting at a fundraiser on Oak Mountain Road left one person dead, a news release said.

The press release states that officers responded to a shooting at a fundraiser where a large crowd was in attendance before 9 p.m. on September 8.

Upon arrival, officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest. An officer rendered life-saving aid before transporting him to a Charlotte hospital. The victim succumbed to his injuries.

When officers arrived on scene, they learned that a second victim was taken to a hospital by private vehicle and is in stable condition, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators are working to identify the shooter.
