Red Sox vs. Yankees: Predictions, Tips, Odds – 9-14

2024 has not been a good year for Gerrit Cole and his problems will likely continue this afternoon in the Bronx when he faces a bitter rival.

The New York Yankees have a narrow three-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles and can extend that lead this afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Bronx Bombers, right-hander Gerrit Cole will have to face Boston, and our Red Sox-Yankees predictions predict that the Cy Young winner will continue to struggle against their AL East rivals.

Prediction Red Sox vs. Yankees

My best bet
Gerrit Cole under 18.5 outs (-165 at BetMGM)

Best odds available in your region

My analysis

During his 12-year career, New York Yankees star Gerrit Cole was a thorn in the side of many MLB teams. Well, all of them except the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees right-hander struggled against Boston, going 7-5 with a 4.84 ERA, and those problems continued this season.

Boston defeated the former Cy Young Award winner on July 6, allowing four runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. Cole managed the strikeouts (8) and the Yankees won, but it wasn't easy.

Cole will likely collect his Ks, as the Red Sox fail against righties quite often (25%), but the aging right-hander has not managed 18.5 outs once this season.

Truthfully, the Yankees don't let Cole pitch more than six innings. In Chicago, he threw 82 pitches in six innings before being taken out of the game. On Sunday, after 90 pitches in five innings, manager Aaron Boone let Cole finish the sixth inning – but that was it.

Boston has also scored the 11th most runs against right-handed pitchers this season. The Red Sox have five hitters with xBAs over .256 in their lineup and boast the eighth-best wRC+ against right-handers.

Cole's bet on under 18.5 outs is tempting and worth a try today.

Aaron Judge's choice: Everyone advances

My best bet
Aaron Judge Over 1.5 Total Bases (+125 at bet365)

My analysis

Yankees hitter Aaron Judge is back in the swing of things.

Last night he hit a grand slam to end the longest home run drought of his career, and he enters tonight's matchup with a three-game hitting streak.

Judge is the league's leading home run player (52) and RBI player (130). Judge has also hit 34 doubles, which is 15th best, and will now face Brayan Bello, who has a measly .314 BABIP against right-handers.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox bullpen has the 29th-worst ERA of the last two weeks and the fifth-highest ERA (4.61) of the season.

Judge is in good shape, but the Red Sox pitchers are not, and I think the Yankees captain will manage 1.5 total bases today.

Red Sox vs. Yankees – Same Game Combo (SGP)

DraftKings Logo

Aaron Judge 2+ Total Bases

Rafael Devers 2+ total bases

DraftKings doesn't allow us to correlate pitching outs, but I found a nice SGP that fits our Judge bet.

Over his career against Cole, Rafael Devers is 14-41 (.353) with eight bombs and 19 RBIs. He hit for a yard against the Yankees right-hander in July and has exceeded his total bases prop in three of his last 10 games.

Plus, New York's bullpen hasn't fared any better than Boston's stoppers. The Yankees' .290 BABIP and 4.86 ERA over the past two weeks are questionable, and I'm partial to Dever's chances of doing damage today.
