PDP crisis: “He did not participate in his own election”, national chairman dismisses Dino Melaye

  • PDP national chairman Umar Damagum said suspended former Senator Dino Melaye was part of the opposition party's internal problems.
  • According to the PDP chairman, Melaye ran for the governorship election in Kogi State but did not contest the election for himself.
  • Damagum’s comment came shortly after the PDP suspended Melaye in Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1.

Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has raised concerns about loyalty within the party, citing in particular the conduct of former Senator Dino Melaye in the recent Kogi gubernatorial election.

In an interview with Daily trustDamagum responded to Melaye’s remarks that the PDP was a “party of yesteryear”.

In addition, Damagum criticised Melaye for allegedly damaging the party's image and stressed that individuals using the party's platform have a responsibility to promote their interests. While acknowledging that victory or defeat is an inherent part of the political process, Damagum stressed that candidates must at least “lose credibly”.

This development came in the wake of the suspension of Melaye by the PDP over alleged anti-party activities, which exacerbated internal divisions within the party. The Ayetoro/Iluagba 1 District of the PDP in Kogi suspended the former Senator on Friday, September 13, over allegations of anti-party activities.

The PDP crisis remained unresolved even after the 2023 presidential election, when the party lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.
