“I’m such an idiot”: Formula 1 jewel causes bizarre crash

Oliver Bearman survived a moment of shock during the third free practice session before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix unscathed – but blamed himself after a strange crash.

“I’m such an idiot,” radioed the young Haas driver, who replaced the suspended Kevin Magnussen in Baku after he had caused red flags shortly before.

The young Brit turned into the first corner after the long finishing straight, but was clearly too fast. Bearman therefore wanted to turn into the emergency exit, but made this decision a little too late – and rammed the wall from the side with his car.

The 19-year-old was uninjured, but his frustration was clearly audible on the radio, and he swore loudly several times. Because of the interruption, several other drivers were also unable to complete their fast lap.

Bearman is set to compete in his second Grand Prix in Baku, having already replaced Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari in Saudi Arabia this year. He will become a regular driver at Haas next season.
