Everything about Emmy presenter Eugene Levy and his family

It has been almost a decade since Schitt’s Creek became America's favorite import from Canada, and now two of its stars, Eugene and Dan Levy, are teaming up again: this time as hosts of the Emmys. These will be the second Emmy Awards of 2024, as the 2023 ceremony was postponed to January 2024 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

“For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a real quarantine tent, the prospect of hosting in a real theater this year was incentive enough,” Eugene and Dan said in a joint statement. “We're excited to toast this extraordinary season of television and can't wait to spend the evening with you all on September 15.”

The couple already made history in 2020 when they became the first father-son duo to win Emmy Awards in the same year (thanks to the aforementioned Canadian sitcom, of course). But they weren't the only Levy family members involved: Dan's sister Sarah Levy also starred in the show, and Eugene's brother Frank served as a producer.

Although Eugene and his wife Deborah tried hard to give their children a “normal” childhood, it seems like this family was destined for Hollywood from the start. Here's everything you know or don't know about Eugene Levy and his (extremely talented, extremely funny) family.

Eugene Levy is a Hollywood comedic legend. Known for his roles in the Y2K cult classics American cake, Best of the ShowAnd Bring the house downhe has recently made a name for himself by playing a completely new role: himself. His latest project, The reluctant travelerfollows the actor on his rather reluctant journey around the world.

“Up until this current job, literally everything was a character,” Eugene said in an interview with diversity. “But that's me, and I had to get used to being myself on camera, which was a pretty big deal. The fact that it happened in the late fall of my career, so to speak, was a pretty good thing, in my opinion.”

From 2015 to 2020 Eugene played in Schitt’s Creek along with his son. The couple also co-wrote the show and helped produce it. At the end of its five-year run, the show had won a total of 10 Emmys, most of which they took home in 2020.

“See, I told you I was good,” Eugene joked in his acceptance speech at the 2020 Emmy Awards. “I guess it's kind of ironic that I'm getting an Emmy for a comedy performance for the most straightforward role I've ever played. Now I have to seriously question what I've been doing for the last 50 years.”

It wasn't long before Eugene's son Dan decided to follow in his father's footsteps. Dan started as a presenter on MTV's After the show in 2006; then he founded Not a Real Company Productions with Eugene, the Schitt’s Creek.

“Watch out [my dad] work was one of the great master classes for me in how to do it right,” said Dan People. “He handled his career with such grace, poise and respect and really helped me advance my professional career.”

Next to Schitt’s CreekDan has produced, written and acted in a number of films and television shows, including 2023 Good grief and 2024 Unfrosted.

Three years after Dan's birth, little sister Sarah Levy joined the family in 1986. The actress started her career with a small role in Eugene's film Cheaper by the dozen 2. She also played the role of waitress Twyla in Schitt’s Creek. “It was really just the quality of the show that was the most important thing, and everything else was just the icing on the cake,” she said of the series in an interview with People.

In July 2022, Sarah had her own son with her husband Graham Outerbridge. “He chose to come early, but we are so happy that sweet James Eugene Outerbridge is here,” she wrote on Instagram. Sarah has since starred in the TV shows SurrealEstate And The holiday shiftand landed the role of Aunt Ida in the upcoming Stephen King adaptation. The monkey.

Married to Eugene since 1977, Deborah Divine is the member of the Levy family least interested in the limelight. Of course, that doesn't stop her husband from singing her praises on stage, as he did at the 2020 Emmy Awards:

“First, I want to thank my beloved wife of 43 years, Deb Divine, for all the love, support and wise advice over the years,” he said at the start of his acceptance speech for the award for best lead actor in a comedy series. “I wouldn't be up here without you, Deb. I love you.”

Divine worked on several Hollywood projects in the 1990s, but she decided to raise Dan and Sarah with Eugene in Toronto so that they could have a “normal” childhood.

“Toronto is a normal city,” said Eugene People. “They were able to grow up with all the opportunities open to them, whatever they wanted to do. We didn't want them to be trapped in show business. The irony, of course, is that they both became actors – and now we're all on a show together.”
