Blue Mountains woman accused of murdering her two children faces first court appearance

The case of a woman accused of stabbing her two children to death in the Blue Mountains has gone to court.

Patricia Smith appeared in Parramatta Local Court this morning after being charged with two counts of domestic violence-related murder last night.

The bodies of Russell and Ben Smith, aged nine and 11, were found by their father in their Faulconbridge home on Tuesday.

Ms Smith did not apply for bail this morning and will remain in custody until her next court appearance in November.

Ms Smith only briefly addressed the court to confirm that she understood what was happening and to thank the judge.

Paul McGirr, Patricia Smith's lawyer, said his client's family was devastated and urged the public to respect their privacy.

Outside court, Ms Smith's lawyer, Paul McGirr, said her family was devastated.

“Many family members are really suffering. Parents, grandparents and the like,” he said.

“We ask everyone to respect privacy because… from the emergency responders who had to go to the scene of the accident to everyone else, there are many people who were exposed to this.”

Police believe the bodies of the two boys were found by their father in their home.

Mrs Smith was also found in the house, allegedly with self-inflicted stab wounds.

She was taken to Westmead Hospital under police guard.

On Thursday, the boys' father spoke for the first time since the incident, describing his sons as “happy, funny, outgoing boys” and very popular.

“Like other boys their age, they loved sport, football, the Penrith Panthers, fishing, books, music and spending time with their friends and their puppy Max,” he said in a New South Wales Police statement.
