The rarest traffic sign in Germany can only be found on the A9. Hardly any driver knows its meaning. What is it all about?

Many drivers and other road users lose track of the signs in Germany. Some signs and markings appear on almost every road, while others almost never appear and their meaning is therefore completely unclear. Most Germans have probably never seen it. However, those who live in the south of the country might be familiar with the rare traffic sign. To be more precise, it is located on the A9 between Pfaffenhofen and Kreuz Holledau Oriented from Munich.

The traffic sign, which is around 70 centimetres tall, stands out with its black and white design and cryptic pattern. The symbols depicted are difficult to identify, only circles, triangles and squares can be seen. However, this is not important, because drivers can easily identify the so-called “landmark sign” confidently.

Landmark sign intended for autonomous vehicles

In fact, the landmark sign was not designed for drivers. Instead, the traffic sign is intended autonomous vehicles for orientation The motorway section, on which there are a total of 13 signs, is a test track for autonomous driving and assistance systems.

Automated and networked vehicles know exactly where they are thanks to the signs based on their longitudinal and transverse position. The information from the signs is recorded by the test car's sensors. The landmark signs are part of the Pilot project “Digital Test Field Highway” (DTA) of the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV). This is how the new technology can be successful in real traffic.
