Percival Everett, Rachel Kushner and Miranda July are nominees for the National Book Awards in the fiction category

NEW YORK – Percival Everett's “James,” his acclaimed retelling of Mark Twain's “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” is nominated for a National Book Award. Also on the long list of top 10 novels are Rachel Kushner's innovative thriller “Creation Lake” and novelist and filmmaker Miranda July's middle-age-focused “All Fours.”

The National Book Foundation released the list of novels on Friday, capping off a week of announcements in five competition categories — fiction, nonfiction, poetry, young adult literature and books in translation. Judges will whittle the lists down to five on Oct. 1, and the winners will be announced Nov. 20 during a dinner ceremony in Manhattan, where novelist Barbara Kingsolver and publisher and activist Paul Coates will receive honorary awards.

The fiction list includes two short story collections, “Ghostroots” by Pemi Aguda and “Rejection” by Tony Tulathimutte, and three debut novels, “Martyr!” by Kaveh Akbar, “Catalina” by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio and “Yr Dead” by Sam Sax, which is partly set outside of Trump Tower in Manhattan. The other fiction nominees are “The Most” by Jessica Anthony and “My Friends” by Hisham Matar.
