Suspect in custody, woman dead in home burglary in Pittsfield Twp.

In a nighttime attack and break-in at the home of two elderly residents near Ann Arbor, the woman died, the man and their dog were injured, police are investigating.

The incident occurred in the 1900 block of Breckland Drive in Pittsfield Township. Police arrived at the scene around 12:06 a.m. Friday, Pittsfield Township police said. A suspect entered the home and assaulted the two residents, both in their 80s, police said. Officers found two victims, a man and a woman, with life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital, where the female victim died.

Police arrested a suspect in the case, a 40-year-old Pittsfield Township man, police said. The suspect initially fled the scene and a neighbor reported that a man matching the suspect's description had knocked on their door, at which point police approached and arrested him, police said.

The 82-year-old male victim is in stable condition in hospital, police said. The suspect and the victims did not know each other, police said.

A dog also sustained injuries and was taken to a local veterinary clinic for treatment, police said.

The suspect is being held in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail pending further investigation. Officials did not release the suspect's name.

According to a Pittsfield Township police investigation, the suspect had an altercation with family members at a residence in the 1700 block of Weatherstone Drive prior to the break-in and robbery.
