In a tragic incident, at least eight people drowned while bathing in the Meshwo river in Gandhinagar district of Gujarat on Friday evening, an official said. Giving information about the incident, Sub-District Magistrate BB Modiya said that the dead were residents of Vasna Sogthi village in Dehgam taluka. The incident took place near the village.

Following the incident, SDM Modiya said he was at the spot to oversee the search and rescue operation. “We have recovered eight bodies from the river. As it is still unclear how many people entered the water, the search is on. The dead were locals but they may have misjudged the depth of the river at the spot,” he said. He added that the water level had recently risen due to a dam under construction a short distance away.

Meanwhile, NDRF personnel also reached the spot and started a rescue and relief operation. NDRF team commander Lakhan Raghuvanshi said, “The NDRF team from Gandhinagar is conducting the rescue operation… 8 bodies have been recovered and according to the villagers, one person is missing… The rescue operation is being carried out by a diving team… A team of NDRF and SDRF is conducting the rescue operation…”
