The attack continued until Kumar was handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Kanpur. Though he was given medical treatment at the KPM Hospital, his condition deteriorated and he succumbed to his injuries.

Confirming Kumar's death, SHO, GRP, Kanpur, Om Narayan Singh said that the girl's mother had filed a complaint under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on Friday. The complaint has been forwarded to the GRP Aishbagh, Lucknow. “The body will be handed over to his uncle, who has arrived,” Singh added.

Prashant Kumar, a Group D employee, was on his way to New Delhi and was travelling in AC-3 class.

The incident reportedly occurred after the girl accused Kumar of misbehaviour following his departure from Lucknow.

Following the incident, both the family and the passengers became angry and started attacking Prashant. The train to Kanpur arrived at 4:45 am and the police were informed. The authorities arrested Prashant from platform 7 and took him into custody at the GRP railway station. The girl's family filed a complaint against him, which led to his arrest. By noon, Prashant's condition deteriorated and the police subsequently took him to KPM Hospital, where he was declared dead at 3:10 pm.

The GRP investigation revealed that Prashant, who had a regular ticket, was travelling in the AC coach. According to the girl's family, the TTE had allotted him seat number 11 in the coach. Prashant, who originally hails from Bihar, had secured the railway job after the death of his father S. Kumar.
