Following the incident, the victim was arrested by his family on Tuesday evening.

Police said Kumar boarded the Humsafar Express train with the victim's family in Siwan, Bihar. He offered his bunk to the 11-year-old girl. He sexually abused her when her mother was not there.

The girl told her family and other passengers about the incident. They were furious and beat him severely. He was taken into GRP custody at Kanpur Central Railway Station.

Soon his health deteriorated. The GRP took him to KPM Hospital where he was declared dead.

The victim's mother had filed a complaint against Kumar under Section 74 (criminal force against any woman who intends to outrage her modesty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police said.

An FIR was registered at GRP Lucknow.

After a three-member medical panel performed an autopsy, his body was handed over to the family.

The incident came amid nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Sanjay Roy was arrested for allegedly raping and murdering the doctor in the hospital's seminar room on August 9. The doctor, a medical student, had retreated to the room to rest during her 36-hour shift.

The man was seen on surveillance camera entering the room at 4:03 a.m. on August 9.

The woman was found in the room hours later.

Roy's Bluetooth headphones were also found at the crime scene.
