Police Minister Mchunu expresses his condolences after the killing of seven family members in Hlokozi, KZN

On Friday, 13 September 2024, the Department of Police released a media statement titled “Minister of Police expresses condolences on the tragic murder of seven family members in Hlokozi, KZN.”

Police responded quickly to reports of gunfire and found the bodies of three women, ages 35, 38 and 55, a 48-year-old man and three children, ages 5, 11 and 12, lying in a pool of blood in their living room.

Initial indications suggest that the crime may be related to family disputes or work-related conflicts, but investigations to determine the exact motive are ongoing.

Statement by the Minister of Police on the family murders

“We are shocked and saddened by the murder of seven members of a family in KwaZulu-Natal. These killings were senseless, inhumane and heartless and have shocked an entire community. We will spare no effort to bring the culprits to justice and we have already made progress in our investigations. I want to assure the family and the public that all resources will be mobilised to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice and that the safety of the people of Highflats is restored,” Minister Senzo Mchunu said in a SAPS media statement.

The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Thami Ntuli, and the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, visited the family on Thursday, 12 September.
