Tempe police shoot armed suspect near Arizona Mills Mall

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) – A man is dead Thursday afternoon after a police shooting at an apartment complex a few blocks from Arizona Mills shopping center in Tempe.

It happened just before 12:30 p.m. near Baseline Road and Beck Avenue, east of Interstate 10.

A victim called police and said the suspect threatened to point a gun at him.

Officers arrived and spoke with the victim, who identified the suspect in his apartment.

The man spoke to officers through a window and the officers then withdrew from the apartment, police said.

Finally the man came out of the apartment and went back inside.

He then came out a second time and pointed a gun at the officers, police said.

Then two officers shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured.

The suspect's name has not been released.

Baseline Road was closed in both directions but has now reopened.

This is the 41st officer-involved shooting in the Valley and the 68th overall in the state in 2024.
