UM-Flint receives .5 million grant for victim support program

Flint, Michigan (WNEM) – The University of Michigan-Flint School of Nursing’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program will continue to train nurses thanks to a $1.5 million grant.

The grant is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Over the next three years, the program will receive $1,481,387.

Launched in 2021, the program trains nurses to care for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

The funding will help expand the impact of the SANE program to rural and disadvantaged communities across the state. The goal is to improve immediate care for victims of sexual violence and increase long-term health outcomes. The funding will also provide financial support for nurses to participate in the program.

“It has changed my life,” said Gail Spiridigliozzi, a graduate of the program. “This program is taught by great professionals who are very caring and passionate about helping victims of assault. I would recommend this program to any nurse looking for a fulfilling role that can have a direct impact on their community.”
