Richland coroner identifies woman who drove into Broad River

RICHLAND CO., SC (WOLO) – Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford has identified the woman whose body was discovered in the Broad River Wednesday following a car crash.

According to Coroner Rutherford, the victim is Tierra Hamer, 23, of Columbia, South Carolina.

Officers said they responded to a domestic incident at 1630 Longcreek Drive at 1 p.m. where a man said Hamer had just hit him with her vehicle and was attempting to do so again.

When officers arrived at the scene, Hamer fled in her vehicle and began a chase.

While police officers attempted to catch up with her, authorities said she intentionally drove down the dead end of Omarest Drive and into the Broad River.

Multiple rescue teams were dispatched to the water between Columbia-Richland Fire and RCSD.

According to investigators, the RCSD diving team found Hamer underwater about an hour and a half later. Despite several rescue attempts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

This incident remains under investigation.
