Memorial service for Delta Tech-Ops employee killed in tire explosion

One of the employees killed in a tire explosion at the Delta Technical Operations (also known as Delta TechOps) maintenance facility will be buried Thursday afternoon.

Mirko Marweg worked in the paint shop at Delta Tech-Ops for around 20 years. The department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of aircraft.

Officials said the 58-year-old man was one of two employees killed in the Aug. 20 explosion – the other was 37-year-old Kuis Aldarondo. A third employee, Caleb Pine, was injured. His current condition has not been released.

Marweg’s family described him as a “great man” and “great father.”

“He's the best father I've ever had,” Marweg's son Andre Coleman told FOX 5's Tyler Fingert. “He came into my life and helped me turn my life around.”

According to Coleman, Marweg was not scheduled to work on the day of the tragedy, but he did take on an extra shift.

He was planning to retire from Delta next year and was planning to go on vacation to Tahiti with his wife the week after the explosion.

A few days after the explosion, Coleman and Marweg's wife went to the Gregory B. Levett Funeral Home in Conyers to arrange the funeral and visit him, but they said the injuries he sustained were just too severe and they shouldn't have gone. They did, however, get the items he had with him, which was very emotional for Marweg's wife.

“We just received the Mississippi state lanyard, his wedding ring, his cell phone, his cards and his driver's license,” Coleman said. “The fact that she actually has that in her hand is not good.”

Marweg's funeral will be held at 3 p.m. at the Gregory B. Levett Funeral Home in Conyers.

The federal investigation into the fatal accident is still ongoing.
