Werl – The restaurant “Alte Kirche” in Werl recently faced a culinary challenge in the popular Kabel Eins show “Mein Lokal – Dein Lokal” and did very well. The show, which was recorded in Werl, was broadcast on Wednesday.

Under the direction of head chef Vincenzo Mazza, the restaurant was visited and evaluated in advance by the renowned professional chef Mike Süsser. Together, in the historic setting of the Old Church, they cooked a dish that delighted Süsser: spaghetti with shrimp, refined with olive oil from Calabria, the home of Vincenzo Mazza. Before the restaurateurs and chefs came and evaluated the dishes, there was a test meal with the TV chef.

“I learned to cook from my mother,” says Mazza, as he skillfully and confidently fries the prawns in front of Mike Süsser. The aroma of fresh ingredients fills the room, and Süsser is impressed by the ease and precision with which the chef prepares the dishes. “It's amazing how he brings out the taste of the prawns,” praises the food critic. The spaghetti, which comes from a small factory in Italy, is also impressive in terms of its quality.

But it is not just the culinary art that makes this day special. The atmosphere of the “Old Church”, which has been run by Vincenzo Mazza and his wife Sofia since 2018, plays a decisive role in the extraordinary experience.

After the historic building stood empty for a long time, the Mazzas were transformed into a culinary gem that now delighted with authentic Italian cuisine and a unique ambience.

When the guests – experienced restaurateurs and chefs from Hamm, Werne and Kamen – arrive, Sofia Mazza is greeted as a charming hostess with a bouquet of flowers. “I would like to spoil my guests today with a wonderful Italian menu,” she announces with a smile. The guests' enthusiasm is evident right from the start: the restaurant's exceptional atmosphere and acoustics are praised, and the menu, which is elegantly framed in wood, also garners recognition.

“My Local – Your Local” on Kabel Eins: Italian cuisine is well received

The starters are the beginning of the evening – typically Italian but with Vincenzo Mazza's personal touch. After 46 years of experience in the kitchen, Mazza has developed his own knives.

The tomato soup is very popular, while the carpaccio only receives slight criticism because the meat is not cut thinly enough – but it is highly praised for its taste. The fried prawns with vegetables are convincing due to their authenticity and perfect preparation. The antipasto, which has something for every taste, is also consistently rated positively. Overall, the guests would give the starters 34 points – an initial mood test that visibly satisfies Sofia and Vincenzo Mazza.

For the main course, Vincenzo Mazza served a classic Saltimbocca alla Romana: saddle of veal with sage and Parma ham, briefly fried in butter and refined with fresh sage leaves and dry white wine. The sauce is made from the roasting juices – a masterpiece of Italian cuisine. Other dishes such as pizza with various types of olives also delighted the testers. Mike Süßer particularly likes the fact that the olives on the pizza are still whole and can therefore develop their full flavor.

For dessert, Vincenzo Mazza's dessert creation Zabaione received high marks. “A hit in the Old Church,” enthused the Werl residents. The wine selection also goes perfectly with the dessert and is praised as “on point.”

At the end of the evening, the total bill comes to 205 euros – a fair price for the culinary experience offered in this special setting, the guests think. “When criticism came, they dealt with it very professionally,” says Mike Süßer, summarizing his impressions at the end of his visit to Werl.

The “Old Church” is closed this week. “We watched the show with the family in Poland, as we are here for Vincenzo's daughter's wedding,” reports Sofia Mazza. “We were a little tense, but when the results were announced, we were just happy.” The points were awarded fairly, concludes Vincenzo Mazza. “I think it went well for us.”
