Early on Wednesday morning, New South Wales Police were called to Monaro Street in the city's east, where they found a 42-year-old man from nearby Jerrabomberra with numerous stab wounds to his arms and legs.

Vikas Sharma was driving through Queanbeyan around 1am on Wednesday when he was stopped by the man, who was in a “poor condition”.

“His whole right hand was covered in blood, and his pants were also covered in blood. [there was] Blood on his face – everywhere,” said Mr Sharma.

“The man said, 'Please help me, I'm dying.'”

Mr Sharma, a long-distance delivery driver from Victoria, said the man initially asked Mr Sharma to drive him to hospital, after which his vehicle was covered in bloodstains.

But instead, Mr Sharma called the emergency services because “there was far too much blood on him.”

“He was happy because he said, 'You saved my life, you saved my life,'” Sharma said.

“He [then] said: 'Please call an ambulance, I'm dying here.'”

Other drivers did not stop

Initial investigations by New South Wales Police suggest the man may have walked more than 600 metres from the original crime scene to the road where Mr Sharma stopped to assist him.

“He would have been dead – another 10, 15 minutes later he would not have survived,” Sharma said.

Mr Sharma said that although it was dark and “shady”, he was disappointed that other drivers had not stopped to help the man.

“I was a little scared to quit, but there's no point. If we don't help others, how are we supposed to build a better community,” he said.

“Someone dies there and people think their five minutes are more important than the person's death.”
