Government and society should be ashamed: Rahul Gandhi criticises BJP after army officers attacked and girlfriend raped in MP

Congressman and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday strongly condemned the brutal attack on two young army officers and the rape of their companion in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, calling the incident a “shame on the entire society”.

In a lengthy social media post, Gandhi sharply criticised the law and order in BJP-ruled states and questioned the saffron-led governments' “negative” attitude towards crimes against women.

“Law and order are almost non-existent in the BJP-ruled states – and the BJP government's negative attitude towards the increasing crimes against women by the day is extremely worrying,” he said in a scathing statement.

The Congress leader attributed the criminals’ audacity to a “total failure of the government” that had led to an unsafe environment for the country’s daughters.

“The audacity of the criminals is the result of the utter failure of the government and the insecure environment prevailing in the country, which is curtailing the freedom and aspirations of the daughters of India,” he noted.

The Gandhi offspring further said that both the society and the government should be ashamed and think seriously.

“How long will they close their eyes to the responsibility of protecting half the country’s population?” he added.

His comments came in response to the brutal attack on two army officers and the alleged rape of their friend on Tuesday in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

According to reports, the army officers and two of their friends were on a picnic near the Chhoti Jam firing range when the alleged incident occurred.

While they were enjoying the trip, they were surrounded and beaten by a group of men armed with guns and sticks.

They beat the officers and allegedly raped one of their companions at gunpoint.

A case has been opened in this regard and the police are searching for the accused. Two suspects have reportedly been arrested in this case.
