Man accused of murdering Ugandan Olympian suffers fatal burns

The suspected killer of Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, has died from severe burns sustained in the attack that killed Cheptegei. Marangach reportedly set 33-year-old Cheptegei on fire after she returned home from church with her children, resulting in fatal burns to over 75% of her body. She died four days later. Meanwhile, Marangach himself suffered burns to over 41% in the attack. As a result, he suffered respiratory failure, leading to his death. Cheptegei's tragic death has drawn attention to the problem of domestic violence in Kenya, especially within the sporting community. Human rights groups highlight the increased risk faced by female athletes, especially from men seeking financial gain from their winnings. Cheptegei is the third elite female athlete to be killed in Kenya since 2021, underscoring the need for stronger measures to combat domestic violence.
