Canyon ISD talks about the importance of educating students about 9/11

CANYON, Texas (KFDA) – Although the students in school today were not alive on the tragic September 11, 2001, Canyon Junior High School is making sure they are aware of the significance of this day.

At the beginning of the lesson, the students were given a sheet of paper on which a flight and a time were indicated and on which, every minute, what had happened that day was explained.

Teachers give students the opportunity to hear many different perspectives from people who experienced the attack.

“We document the events minute by minute to see exactly how chaotic and traumatic that day was. The kids have an opportunity to reflect for a moment,” said Bailey Cavanaugh, 8th grade history teacher at Canyon Junior High.

Teachers at the Canyon talk about the students' unique experiences when they talk to people who remember that day 23 years ago.

“September 11 is one of the unique experiences our children have: they have the opportunity to learn about and learn more about the experiences of others related to this attack,” Cavanaugh said.

This group of students lives only one generation away from this event and has the opportunity to learn from and gain knowledge from the experiences of others related to this attack.

“In our history classes, the events of that day are taught and they are part of our recent history. And even though our students weren't alive then, they can interview their parents and ask them, 'Hey, where were you, what were you doing, do you remember that day?' And I guarantee you, they remember,” said Kirk Kear, principal of Canyon Junior High.

After the presentation, the students were able to ask questions about how it came about and what has happened since then.

Mrs. Cavanaugh asked the students to interview people from their lives who remembered that day.

This is one of the few historical events where students can talk to people who experienced it.
