Suspect arrested for stabbing

A suspect accused of breaking into a Kelowna home and stabbing a woman multiple times remains in custody and will appear in court again next week.

Morgan Marie Smith, 24, is charged with aggravated assault and is in police custody. The British Columbia Public Prosecution Service said Wednesday the case was heard in court in the morning and then adjourned to Sept. 17 at 9:30 a.m. for consultation with counsel.

It remains to be seen when an actual bail hearing will take place.

The Kelowna Mounties said the break-in at the home in the 1300 block of Kelglen Crescent in Kelowna was reported around 1:15 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, a woman broke into the home and stabbed Tanya Gonzales multiple times. The attacker was chased away after other people in the home confronted her.

Tanya Gonzales was treated by first responders and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. She is recovering from her physical wounds but told Castanet News she is struggling with the emotional aftermath.

Her friends have now started a fundraiser to help her find a new place to live. A GoFundMe campaign had raised over $4,000 by Wednesday afternoon.

Within a few hours, the police arrested a suspect.
