A Philadelphia police officer who was hospitalized in June after being shot during a traffic stop has died.

Officer Jaime Roman, who served in the 25th Precinct, died Tuesday. Police Chief Kevin Bethel said Roman was surrounded by his family and had “fought bravely” since the shooting.

Mayor Cherelle Parker said in a social media post that a “grateful city mourns the loss of Roman, a husband and father.”

“For now, we want to hug Officer Roman and his family and pray for them,” Parker said.

Bethel said further details would be announced on Wednesday.

“Please pray for his family and friends,” Bethel said.

The suspect in this case, 36-year-old Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez, is being held on $12.5 million bail.

Officer Roman was shot and killed in the 3500 block of F Street on Saturday, June 22 at approximately 7:30 p.m.

He was one of the two officers who stopped Vazquez.

According to police, Vazquez did not have a driver's license and the car was not registered. Officers called a Park Department tow truck and allowed Vazquez and three friends, who arrived at the scene in another vehicle after the traffic stop, to recover the items.

Then officers saw a holster and confronted Vazquez, who fled. As he ran, he shot at police three times, hitting Roman in the neck. His partner was able to return fire, but Vazquez was not hit. Vazquez continued running.

According to police, he attempted to steal a minivan driver's car and then broke into two homes, taking the second homeowner hostage.

SWAT officers surrounded the house and Vazquez was eventually taken into custody.

Sources told Action News that this was not the first time Vazquez had shot at police officers.

Criminal records show that Vazquez shot at police officers in Puerto Rico following an alleged car theft in 2011.
