Chennai: Three people were hit by trains in individual incidents in the city and its suburbs on Tuesday. All of the victims were men who died while trying to cross railway tracks.
The first incident occurred near Vandalur, where police discovered the body of a man who had been hit by a train. Investigation revealed that the victim was Pappukumar, 30, from Bihar. He was hit by an EMU train while crossing the tracks between Vandalur and Perungalathur railway stations. Quoting witness statements, police said: Pappukumar was engrossed in his mobile phone at the time of the accident.
In the second accident near Potheri railway station, a 40-year-old man named Ramu, a resident of Villupuram, was also hit by a train. Witnesses said Ramu was trying to cross the tracks and did not notice the approaching train.
The third incident occurred at Guindy railway station, where the railway police discovered the body of an unidentified 25-year-old man. Police are currently trying to ascertain the identity of the victim.
The state railway police have registered all three incidents and launched an investigation into the matter.
Railway officials have stated that they are actively working to close off railway lines in all suburban areas where there is a risk of trespassing by the public.
Despite these efforts, people still cross the tracks and do not use the footbridges to pass safely. In addition to issuing fines, railway authorities are also focusing on raising awareness about the dangers of trespassing on railway tracks.
In the last five months alone, at least ten people have died in similar accidents along the suburban route.
