Peter Obi is Nigeria’s Donald Trump – Presidency

The President's Office has compared the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, with former US President and Republican candidate for the 2024 US election, Donald Trump.

President Bola Tinubu's Senior Special Assistant for Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, made the comparison in a post on X.com on Wednesday following the US presidential debate between Trump and Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Peter Obi is the Nigerian version of Donald Trump. Like Obi, Trump will use the most negative epithets imaginable to describe a country he wants to lead again, just to make a point and incite his base,” he wrote.

During the debate, Harris and Trump clashed on many issues ranging from abortion rights to immigration as both candidates sought to sway voters in a hotly contested race.

Ajayi added: “Kamala Harris represented Trump very well last night in her first in-person debate. Kamala won the debate convincingly and left no one doubting his ability.

“Vice President Harris knew Trump's weaknesses and set traps for him. Trump fell for her bait. Both candidates' claims were tested for veracity in the debate. While Harris allegedly made only one false claim, Trump made 33 false claims in the same 90-minute debate.”

According to media reports, Trump frequently responded to Harris' provocations, repeating conspiracy theories and false claims about the 2020 election and immigration.

The debate moderators constantly checked the former president's facts, but Trump only persisted with his claims, such as when he claimed that immigrants were eating dogs and pets belonging to U.S. citizens.

“In Springfield, they eat the dogs – the people who came here – they eat the cats, they eat the pets of the people who live there. And that's what's happening in our country,” Trump said, contradicting Springfield's city manager, who said such allegations had no basis in reality.

The 2024 US elections are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
