Peter Renaday, the voice actor best known as Master Splinter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is dead. He was 89.

His agent confirmed his death to PEOPLE. TMZ reported that police officers conducted a check at his Burbank home on Sunday and found him dead inside.

His niece Mindy Zachary told the newspaper that his air conditioning broke down and that his family felt his death did not require further investigation. Renaday's death appeared to be natural, according to TMZ. PEOPLE reached out to Burbank police for comment.

His friends and former colleagues, including Townsend Coleman, Cam Clarke, Sam Kwasman and Ike Eisenmann, commented on the news on social media.

Coleman, who lent his voice to Michelangelo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtleswrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 10: “Guys, I am devastated this morning to learn of the passing of our dear Sensei Peter Renaday yesterday. Pete was one of the most genuine and down to earth people I have ever known and I will miss him very much.”

He said the two had met just a month ago and that Renaday, “at 89, was as vibrant as ever, as endearingly silly, smart and talented as I've always known him to be.”

Kwasman expressed similar sentiments, writing on Facebook: “It is with great sadness that I announce that my good friend Peter Renaday, who voiced Mickey Mouse among dozens of other voices, passed away this week.”

He recalled that the two often had brunch together “every few months” with other voice actors, adding, “I'm going to miss his stories about theater and working for Disney. He's going to be missed a lot.”

“To my dear Ninja Turtle fans, many of you have heard by now, but we just lost our amazing sensei, Master Splinter, and best friend Peter Renaday. As I write this, the tears in my eyes are making it difficult for me to see enough to write this post,” Clarke wrote on Facebook, recalling seeing Renaday at his 88th birthday celebration.
