Atiku: Tinubu government’s attack on civil society organisations is reminiscent of a military dictatorship

Former Vice President Atiku Abubukar has condemned the government's attacks on civil society organisations, describing them as “deeply disturbing”, similar to those during the days of military dictatorship.

In a statement signed on his X account, Atiku said: “The escalating attack by the Bola Tinubu administration on civil society and the media is deeply disturbing. The level of repression now imposed surpasses even the harshest times of military dictatorship.”

“The recent arrest of Joe Ajaero, Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, on his way to an official event is emblematic of this regime’s relentless campaign to intimidate and suppress organised trade unions.

“Just days earlier, security forces had arrested a journalist, only to later claim it was a serious mistake. What if the incident had turned fatal?

“Now Tinubu's regime is extending its repressive grip on @SERAPNigeria, an action that is a grave insult to our democratic values. This siege is anathema to the principles of freedom and justice.”

Atiku said it was imperative that Tinubu and his security apparatus direct their zeal and intimidation at the real perpetrators of violence – terrorists and bandits – who were inflicting untold suffering on the Nigerian people.
