14-year-old girl arrested for arson after body found dead in house fire

Police were called to a property in Bedale Drive, Leicester, shortly after 4am on Tuesday.

A 14-year-old girl was arrested for arson following a house fire in Leicester.

Police were contacted by firefighters at 4:08am on Tuesday after a person was found dead on the property in Bedale Drive.

Other people at this address were treated in hospital as a precautionary measure.

She was released on bail so that the investigation can continue, Leicestershire Police said.

They added that investigators will “remain unbiased” in examining the circumstances leading to the incident.

Detective Inspector Michael Chandler said: “This is an extremely tragic incident in which, unfortunately, one person has lost their life.

“Our investigation is still at a very early stage and we are still impartial as to the cause of the fire. A dedicated team is conducting investigations and we are working closely with the fire service to establish exactly what happened and how it happened.”

“Specially trained officers continue to provide comprehensive support to the relatives of the deceased.

“I understand that this incident has caused distress and concern in the community and officers remain on site to offer support and reassurance. They are here for you, so please speak to them.”

“As part of our investigation, we continue to speak to the family and residents in the area.

“If you have any information and have not yet spoken to the police, please contact us.”
