In October, the Leipzig Ballet will bring the love story of all love stories to the stage: “Romeo and Juliet”. The premiere is on October 26th. The American choreographer Lauren Lovette brings a breath of fresh air to the world-famous drama by focusing on the relationships and feelings of the characters and weaving the magic of the story with that of the theater itself.

The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under the direction of Anna Skryleva accompanies the Leipzig Ballet – as always live – with the gripping music of Sergei Prokofiev. This is the first, eagerly awaited premiere under the new ballet direction of Rémy Fichet.

Captivating music and probably the greatest love story in the literary canon – “Romeo and Juliet” is one of the most popular ballets ever. The story of young, impetuous love and deep-seated old hatred has been adapted countless times for the stage, film and television.

In her first work for the Leipzig Ballet, American choreographer Lauren Lovette focuses on the core of the tragedy: the relationships and feelings between the characters we all know and whose familiar story we are allowed to follow.

In Shakespeare's captivating drama, love is found in all its forms – be it romantic, platonic or familial – and becomes the catalyst for the greatest happiness and the deepest pain. The set and costume design by Thomas Mika enables a timeless perspective on love, tragedy, friendship and loss, interweaving the magic of the narrative with that of the theater itself.
