Parking chaos at the kindergarten: Will there be more controls?

Blocked exits and blocked sidewalks: conditions that occur on the streets near the Schrezheim kindergarten. After putting up prohibition signs did not help, the city should now take action, or at least that is what the local council wants.

No more prohibition signs

“We cannot put up any more prohibition signs,” says Sonja Fuchs, mayor of Schrezheim, after a recent traffic survey. The result of this: There are already enough signs. But the situation at the kindergarten is currently unsatisfactory, says Fuchs. “People are parking illegally there.” Exits are blocked for a short time, sidewalks are partially blocked by parked cars and children are simply put at risk.

However, the conditions at the kindergarten are nothing new. “It's a constant issue,” said the annoyed mayor. As a first step, the local council had right-before-left markings installed at the intersection in front of the kindergarten months ago. However, the desired effect was not achieved.

There are three parking spaces directly at the kindergarten where you can park your car for a short time and drop off or pick up your children. That's far too few. But a solution seems obvious: “The kindergarten is right next to the festival grounds, and there are enough parking spaces there,” says Fuchs. So they don't understand why parents don't park there and walk the short distance to the kindergarten with their children. Another shortcoming, according to Fuchs: “The illegally parked children are also affected, who walk to the kindergarten on the sidewalk in an exemplary manner.”

Peak times are the problem

In addition, the kindergarten is located on St. Georg Street, a main road in Schrezheim. The illegal parking disrupts the flow of traffic, said the mayor. “There is simply not enough space.”

Since all precautions have so far had no effect, the city is now being monitored more frequently, says Fuchs. That was one of the results of the traffic inspection, says Fuchs.

No increased controls

The parking problem is known to the public order office of the city of Ellwangen, says Anselm Grupp, head of the office for culture, press and tourism, when asked. As at all schools and kindergartens in the city, there are parking rushes at peak times because parents drive children to the door.

Contrary to Fuchs' statement, Grupp explains that there will be no increased checks. Since the parents are within sight of their vehicles, old checks only result in warnings. If the public order office addresses the vehicle directly, it will move it.
