Teenager attacked with carpet knife; Sheriff calls it “disturbing”

JENSEN BEACH, Florida – The Martin County Sheriff’s Office released a new video Tuesday showing the Stabbing of a 14-year-old football player at Jensen Beach High School after training.

Officials said a teammate of the junior football player had been cut in the abdomen with a box cutter.

WPTV reporter Tyler Hatfield obtained cellphone video from the Martin County Sheriff's Office that captured the moments when investigators say the attack occurred.

WPTV also obtained a recording of the 911 call made shortly afterward, in which the student was heard to have “an immediate wound, like a stab wound” “in the abdomen.”

“I find it disturbing that just a few weeks later there was a stabbing at one of our schools,” said Sheriff William Snyder. “I really hope and pray that this will not be the case in the future.”

Snyder said the stabbing occurred around 6:30 p.m. Monday after a junior football team practiced near the field.

The sheriff is not sure what sparked the fight, but said the argument between the two students is nothing new.

Sheriff William Snyder discusses what might have prompted the teenager to injure his teammate with a box cutter.

“I wouldn't like to say that boys are boys, because this is not typical boy behavior,” Snyder said, “but I think it's just a long-running argument between the two of them. Who knows what it's about?”

On Monday evening, Jensen Beach High School Principal Lori Vogel called parents and asked students and families to report anything suspicious before the situation becomes more serious.

“The more we are aware, the better we can work with law enforcement and our district security team to proactively address the issues,” Vogel said in the call.

Snyder said he expects the victim to make a full recovery.

The suspect is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Martin County Jail but is expected to be transferred to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Detention Center.

“The offender's life has been irrevocably changed,” Snyder said. “It is forever changed and he will no longer go to school. He will no longer play on the football team. He will bear the consequences of this act for the rest of his life.”
