Bail hearing postponed for suspect in Kelowna burglary and stabbing – Kelowna News

Hearing in stabbing case postponed

Concerns about public safety in the wake of a burglary and stabbing are not a sign of increasing crime in the city, says Kelowna's top police officer.

“It's really important to point out that the individual in this particular case is in custody. Police did an excellent job over the weekend working with witnesses, our community and those affected by this heinous crime,” Superintendent Kara Triance said during Monday's council meeting.

“The suspect remains in jail pending trial, so I will not comment on the details of the investigation. There will be a bail review in conjunction with our partners at the British Columbia prosecutors' offices.”

While Triance would not discuss the details, the victim and her closest family members have spoken about the horrors they experienced, and online comments have poured in expressing concern about local crime.

It was about 1 p.m. on Sunday when Tanya Gonzales was in the kitchen of her home on Kelglen Crescent when a woman came out of her bathroom where she had been hiding.

Gonzales said she allegedly had a knife in each hand and began stabbing her. As she ran away, the woman continued to attack her, stabbing her in the shoulder.

She said she remembered feeling as if her clothes were soaked with blood before the pain started.

In the end, she suffered five stab wounds.

Later that same day, 24-year-old Morgan Marie Smith was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Her bail hearing was scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed until Wednesday.
