September 11 marks the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. More and more respondents believe that this event changed Americans' lives forever, according to a survey conducted by USA TODAY and Suffolk University.

On the morning of September 11, United Airlines Flights 175 and American Airlines Flights 11 took off from Boston for California before being flown by hijackers into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon while passengers tried to rescue United Airlines Flight 93 from the hijackers before it crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

How many people died on September 11?

According to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, the September 11 attacks in New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania left 2,977 people dead. This figure includes the 2,753 deaths in New York, 184 people at the Pentagon, and 40 people killed when Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.

The youngest passenger to die was two-year-old Christine Hanson, en route to Disneyland on United Airlines Flight 175. The oldest was 82-year-old Robert Norton on American Airlines Flight 11.

The 19 kidnappers from the militant Islamist extremist group Al-Qaeda were also killed.

The victims of 9/11 are honored at the site of the former World Trade Center towers. Victims' names are engraved around basins based on their location at the time of the attacks and their relationship to other victims, so that “almost every name is surrounded by people who were important to them in some way,” according to the 9/11 Ground Zero Tour. Each morning, staff members place white roses on specific names to symbolize the victim's birthday.

In 2019, it was reported that the 200th New York City firefighter died from illnesses related to Ground Zero, including the effects of toxic contaminants, traumatic injuries, and physical and emotional stress. In 2022, the FDNY reported the number was closer to 300.

How many victims of September 11 were never found?

About 40 percent of the victims have yet to be identified, according to the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). That's about 1,103 people. In January, the OCME used advanced DNA analysis to identify the 1,650th victim – John Ballantine Niven, 44, of Oyster Bay, New York, who was a senior vice president at Aon Risk Services.

The attempt to identify the victims of the World Trade Center is the “largest and most complex forensic investigation in the history of the United States,” reports OCME.
