Drew Rosenhaus: Police officers at Tyreek Hill prison should be fired

Prominent NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus, who represents Dolphins star Tyreek Hill, is calling for the officers involved in his client's controversial arrest on Sunday to be fired for their actions.

One of the Miami-Dade Police Department officers has already been placed on leave, Director Stephanie V. Daniels said in a statement Sunday evening.

“Personally, I believe the police officers who did this to Tyreek should not be in this position,” Rosenhaus said Tuesday on the “Dan Le Batard Show” as he watched clips of the incident.

“You should be fired. Look at the guy that just kicked him. That guy should be fired. This is out of control. The guy that jumped in and put him in a chokehold? There's no reason for a cop to have a badge that functions like that when Tyreek wasn't aggressive or violent or resisting in any way. It was appalling the way they treated him. They didn't treat him like a human being.”

The Miami-Dade Police Department has come under public scrutiny following the release of bodycam videos showing multiple police officers conducting Hill's arrest and treating his Dolphins teammates, tight end Jonnu Smith and defensive tackle Calais Campbell, who were present at the scene.

Officers have been aggressive toward the trio, both in terms of force and attitude, including when they handcuffed the Dolphins' star receiver after dragging him from his car.

According to ESPN, officers cited Hill for reckless driving and failure to wear a seatbelt during his drive to Hard Rock Stadium during the Dolphins' 20-17 win over the Jaguars in Week 1.

When asked if Hill agreed with his view, Rosenhaus said “of course,” before clarifying his answer to a question about whether Hill believed the officers should be fired.

“Well, I'll let Tyreek speak to that,” Rosenhaus said. “That's my opinion. He and I haven't had that specific discussion. But I would certainly recommend to Tyreek and the legal team that we pursue this. You know, I think he deserves an apology from every single one of the police officers involved. And those who abused their authority and power, in my opinion, should not be on duty going forward.”

Hill's attorney, Julius B. Collins, said his client is considering what action could be taken.

“We believe the matter escalated because overzealous officers attempted to impose their authority on Mr. Hill because they were not satisfied with how quickly he complied with their request and because Mr. Hill did not roll down his window far enough for their liking,” Collins told the Miami Herald.

“Mr Hill's legal team is exploring all legal remedies that may be available to Mr Hill as we believe the officers' actions on September 8, 2024 were disproportionate.”

While the Dolphins did not go as far as Rosenhaus, who called for job losses, they said there must be consequences.

“We are proud of our strong and positive relationship with the Miami-Dade Police Department and other law enforcement agencies and recognize that the vast majority of officers serve the community with the utmost strength of character and a desire to protect all citizens,” the Dolphins said in their statement Sunday. “However, as is evident in the videos released tonight, there are some officers who confuse their responsibility and obligation to serve with misguided power. While we commend the MDPD for taking the proper and necessary action to quickly release this footage, we also call on them to take equally swift and decisive action against the officers who behaved so despicably.”

However, the South Florida Police Benevolent Association blamed Hill.

“There was an incident prior to yesterday's Dolphins game where Tyreek Hill was handcuffed and released,” South Florida PBA President Steadman Stahl said at the release. “First of all, to be clear, he was not under arrest at any time. He was briefly detained for safety reasons after driving in a manner that placed himself and others in grave danger.”

“After being stopped, Mr. Hill did not immediately cooperate with officers present on the scene, who handcuffed Mr. Hill in accordance with regulations and for their immediate safety. Mr. Hill, still not cooperating, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore returned to the ground.

“After the situation was resolved within a few minutes, Mr. Hill received two tickets and was allowed to leave.”

Daniels said the department is investigating the detention.

“As part of our commitment to transparency and maintaining the public trust, we are releasing the body-worn camera (BWC) footage related to the recent Tyreek Hill incident. While standard protocol is to release bodycam footage after the internal review is complete, the available bodycam footage – totaling 105 minutes and 33 seconds – will be released the day after the incident to underscore the department's commitment to keeping the public informed,” Daniels said in a statement.

“The department is committed to conducting a thorough and objective investigation into this matter, and we will continue to keep the public informed of the outcome of this process.”

Daniels announced on Sunday that she had launched an internal investigation into the case and that the officer had been placed on administrative duties until the investigation was completed.

“I am committed to transparency and accountability to the community in all situations involving my officers,” she said in the statement.

A recently released video shows one of the officers involved not knowing who Hill was and saying, “Oh, damn. Really?” after learning it was the star receiver.

Hill held his own during the Dolphins' victory, catching seven passes for 130 yards and an 80-yard touchdown to help the Dolphins overcome a 17-7 deficit and nail a 52-yard field goal on the final whistle to clinch the victory.
