Milwaukee police investigate alleged sexual assault on MATC campus

According to Milwaukee Area Technical College, police are investigating an alleged sexual assault that occurred in the bathroom of a dormitory on the downtown campus.

The alleged assault occurred around 1:45 p.m. on Sept. 5 in the 700 block of West State Street, according to Milwaukee police. The college's public safety department has identified a suspect, according to a statement from a MATC spokesperson to the Journal Sentinel.

Campus police are conducting additional patrols as a precaution.

“The individual is cooperating and we are referring them to the Milwaukee Police Department, who are leading the investigation,” MATC's statement said. Milwaukee Police confirmed they are still looking for a known suspect.

According to a statement from MATC, the alleged victim and the attacker are believed to be students.

The alleged victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries, Milwaukee police said in a statement.

From 2021 to 2023, the most recent years available, there were 11 reports of sexual assault on the Milwaukee campus, including six reports of rape and five reports of groping. The campus safety report defined sexual assault as rape, sexual abuse, incest and groping.
