Jann cares devotedly for his unstable mother. But then he falls head over heels in love with a girl and changes begin to take place.

After its premiere at the Munich Film Festival last July, the coming-of-age drama “We Forever” will be shown on September 11th at prime time at 8:15 p.m. on Das Erste. Director Johannes Schmid wrote the screenplay together with his brother Thomas Schmid. It is about a young person who has to break away from his close relationship with his mentally ill mother in order to free himself of a lot of emotional baggage.

A teenager sacrifices himself

17-year-old Jann (Philip Günsch) lovingly looked after Lina (Marie Leuenberger): There are great moments in which his mother shows great creativity and really blossoms. But her son also knows her dark side all too well. After a stroke of fate, Lina is highly traumatized, suffers from panic attacks and regularly falls into a depression.

While Jann's father Frank (Stefan Maaß) could no longer cope with it, Lina left and started a new family, the young man feels obliged to his mother and shows a great sense of responsibility: he does the housework, has a part-time job and still delivers at school. There, only his best friend Ben (Vincent Hahnen) knows about his stressful situation at home. But Jann finds it increasingly difficult to keep his secret – especially when he falls in love with his classmate Selma (Mina-Giselle Rüffer).

First love changes everything

With all his obligations, his first love has no place in his everyday life. But his relationship with Selma ultimately shakes up the fragile arrangement at home. Jann is forced to make a difficult but important decision that he probably should have made much earlier.

Maurizio Mango, Peter Trabner, Anna Holter, Nagmeh Alaei, Artur Sorokin, Michael Kamp, Antonia Riet and Ferdi Özten join the ensemble of “We Forever” in supporting roles. The TV film was shot in spring 2023 in Cologne and the surrounding area as well as in Knock near Emden and on the beach in Schillig. It is already available for streaming in the ARD Mediathek.
