Malia Obama and Vivienne Westwood are a couple in red carpet heaven

Malia Obama is in her auteur era and no one could help her better than Vivienne Westwood.

The Obama offspring hit the red carpet at the 50th Deauville American Film Festival in Deauville, France, where she presented her directorial debut, a short film called “The Heart.” The film was previously screened at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where she gave us a taste of her red carpet style (albeit in a more casual setting) in a long gray coat over a light blue shirt and a miniskirt, which she paired with a slim gray knit scarf and knee-high boots.

This time, however, she was able to give a little glimpse of her premiere style. While we know Malia Obama's approach to street style – she often plays with proportions and patterns – this could very well be the former First Daughter's first public appearance in evening wear since she was in the White House.

At the French Film Festival, she wore checkered separates from Vivienne Westwood's fall 2024 collection, designed by the late designer's partner, Andreas Kronthaler. She opted for a draped, off-the-shoulder sweetheart corset in a grey and red tartan, which she paired with an asymmetric skirt in the same pattern as her top, as well as a blue and white tartan.

“Queen,” Obama said of Westwood when asked by a reporter about her outfit. “I don't know that much about fashion, but I like wearing it.”
