Doctor acquitted in Hong Kong case, is being held in India during rape and murder investigation; worked in the city for “a few days”

An Indian doctor who was acquitted in a sexual assault case in Hong Kong seven years ago has reportedly been arrested in the country on suspicion of corruption. The arrest was uncovered during an investigation into the rape and murder of a student in a hospital.

Indian media reported that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who is believed to have worked in Hong Kong for only a few days, was arrested last week by the country's Central Bureau of Investigation on suspicion of corruption in connection with his work as principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a government institution in Kolkata.

His name matches that of an Indian orthopedic surgeon who appeared in a Hong Kong court in 2017 for allegedly sexually harassing a male nursing student at Queen Elizabeth Hospital while working in the city on an exchange program.

Medical sources say he only worked at Yau Ma Tei Hospital for a very short time because his two-month clinical exchange program was cancelled because of the trial.

“Because of the lawsuit, the hospital stopped his deployment and so he actually only worked there for a few days,” the insider said.
