Sanket Bawankule questioned; number plates were present on the car – The Week

Nagpur police on Tuesday said the driver of the car of Sanket Bawankule, the son of the BJP state president, which was involved in a series of accidents on Monday, was arrested and released on bail. Police further said the number plates were still present on the car, refuting claims that they were removed after the accident.

Rahul Madane, deputy commissioner of police, said the accident occurred in the early hours of Monday and the Audi collided with another car and a two-wheeler. However, none of the occupants sustained serious injuries, police said.

According to police, the Audi was registered in the name of Sanket Bawankule, the son of Bharatiya Janata Party state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule. According to police, Arjun Hawre, the driver, Sanket Bawankule and his friend Ronit Chittamwar were in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

“We have questioned all the three occupants of the car. We arrested the driver, Arjun, but he was later released on bail as it was a punishable offence. Their medical samples have been sent to FSL and the report is awaited. When we examined the vehicle, the number plates were still there,” Madane said. He added that Bawankule had confessed to the police that he was in the car.

The BJP politician's son's Audi crashed into several vehicles in the Ramdaspeth area in the early hours of Monday and Arjun and Ronit Chittamwar were nabbed by the police soon after the incident. According to reports, the three were returning from a beer parlor in Dharampeth when the accident occurred.

Police said they are currently reviewing video surveillance footage to determine the course of events.

BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule admitted that the Audi was registered in the name of his son Sanket and an impartial investigation must be conducted. “The police should investigate the accident thoroughly and impartially, without any bias. The culprits should be booked and appropriate action taken against them. I have not spoken to any police officer. The law must be the same for all,” PTI quoted Chandrashekhar as saying.
